Grant-Valkaria is the newest town in Brevard and one of the oldest settlements. Grant was a fishing village on the Indian River in the 1890s, Valkaria a Swedish farming colony inland of it, and the two joined and incorporated in July 2006 to keep large lots and low density as Palm Bay pushed south. Most parcels are one to five acres. The houses are 1970s through 2010s single-family homes on wooded or pasture land along Valkaria Road and Babcock Street, a row of older houses and riverfront homes on US 1, and hangar homes beside the county's Valkaria Airport. Metal roofs have been ordinary out here for decades; shingle is common on the newer houses.
Frances came ashore a short distance south on September 5, 2004, and Jeanne followed on September 26 over almost the same ground, so the older roofs here have been through the county's worst pair of storms. Ian in September 2022 flooded the low ground toward the St. Johns marsh.
