Rockledge was incorporated in August 1887, the first city in Brevard, and it took its name from the coquina ledges along the Indian River that still line Rockledge Drive. The oldest houses stand between US 1 and the river on Barton Avenue and the streets near the old city hall, with Gilded Age hotel-era homes among them. West of US 1 the city is 1950s through 1980s block ranches, and the newer subdivisions west of Fiske Boulevard and Murrell Road went up from the 1990s through the 2010s as the city grew toward Viera.
